About Academic Librarianship

Have you ever wondered what it's really like to be an Academic Librarian?

Well...there are many different types of academic librarians with different skills and responsibilities so there is no one easy description of academic librarianship. This is why we have created an assortment of materials to help you discover more about academic librarianship. You may even want to join this interesting and exciting field!

Jennifer Peters-Lise, Seneca College, Metadata & Digital Services Librarian

Being a digital services librarian requires an interest in all things related to computers, the internet, and technology. It requires you to be curious, willing to take risks and be able to think logically.

My typical day involves:

  • Meeting with faculty to help them integrate library resources into the course management system, Blackboard
  • Coordinating our e-reserves service, which includes cataloguing various resources, troubleshooting any issues that arise, and liaising with our copyright technician for items our faculty would like digitized
  • Creating metadata application profiles for our digital collections, and cataloguing items
  • Using HTML, CSS, XML and XSLT to maintain active library sites, such as the interface for our federated search system or the online research tutorial I created for ESL students last year
  • Researching new technologies and testing new software
  • Writing content for our library website, reports for library managers, and articles for library newsletters.
  • Attending committee meetings for library projects as well as cross-college advisory committees
  • Preparing conference presentations
  • Preparing faculty workshops for teaching with technology

I would not consider myself a highly tech-y digital services librarian. My strengths are design and using technology in teaching. Also, my background is English Literature so I literally learned everything on the job from my amazingly technical manager.
